  • Lilith Moon Youtube Hair tutorials

I do not watch a lot of Youtube videos, the bandwidth in South Africa is not quite as fast or cheap as it is in the United States. However there is one channel that I do enjoy watching on a regular basis and that is Lilith Moon.

The Ukrainian beauty creates hair tutorials that are easy to understand and do yourself. If followed correctly your hair will end up looking professionally styled. Viewers of her channel can post pictures of hairstyles that they want tutorials for. For me one of the perks is that her videos are not long, they are mostly about 4-5 minutes and they are all easier to do than they look.

I really like the hippie hairstyle that celebs such as Pixie Lott and Nicole Richie rocked, but my bangs layers prevented me from creating one long braid to create the effect. This tutorial shows you how to do it even if you have bangs and layers like me.

You can view Lilith Moon's channel [here] and her Facebook page [here] and be sure to check out her Frequently Asked Questions [here].

I am in no way associated with Lilith Moon. I found it tough to find good blogs and tutorials such as hers, so I'm merely spreading the word.

  • Sunday Hairstyle Dutch Crown Braids

I love braids at the moment, as is the rest of the world. The main reason for me is due to the fact that I have given up my flat iron. I no longer flat iron my hair unless it is an absolute must, and braiding prevents having bad hair days.

I love the Dutch crown braid, but unlike most braids, it takes a bit of practice, as your hair is braided right around your crown. I prefer Dutch braids over French as my layers tend to fall out of French braids, but a crown braid can be done using a French plait.

I will be posting a video and photos on how to do a Dutch crown braid later, but I’m nowhere near perfect, I’ve only done it about four times.

  • Is it shedding or is it breaking?

Using horse shampoo has assisted in reducing hair loss, most notable when I washed my hair, but after a while it increased again. The noticeable increase made my hair balls seem so big even though it wasn’t as much as before I started using the shampoo. Just as my hair was finally getting long I presumed that it started breaking off again, I freaked out. I’d never have long hair, I thought to myself. After doing some research, it turns out that there’s still hope for me, my hair wasn’t breaking off, it was shedding!

If you’re a dog or cat owner, chances are, you’ll often find your pet’s hair lying around the house even if it has a gorgeous coat of fur. Shedding is normal, and the same applies to us humans and should not cause a panic. Breakage on the other hand is not, and is caused by a variety of factors.

But how do I how if my hair is shedding or breaking off?

Our hair has a growth cycle, for some people it’s longer than others. At the end of each individual hair’s growth cycle, it falls from the scalp, which means the strand will be about the same length of your hair. You may find a small white tip attached to the end. Don’t stress, a new hair will grow back in its place and unless you have a condition (medical or non-medical), it is completely healthy.

Breakage on the other hand happens at weakened points on the strand. It can be attributed to a variety of different factors such as heat damage or a lack of moisture. Unlike shedding, breakage does not occur at the scalp and hair loss caused by breakage is generally much shorter in length.

But if I’m shedding, why does it seem as if I’m losing so much?

It is possible that you are losing a lot of hair and if that is the case it is best to consult a doctor or dermatologist. Before you do, take a look at the length of your hair, the longer your hair, the more it may seem as if you’re losing a lot of hair. Say for example, two women, one with waist length hair and one with shoulder length shed the same amount of hair daily. The hair that the woman with waist length hair sheds will seem to be more, because her hair is longer.

After learning this, I was more at ease and thankfully I did not rush for scissors in my despair and hopefully this time next year my hair will be at the length I desire.

Do you lose a lot of hair due to shedding?

  • 3 April Sunday Hairstyle The Fishtail Braid

    Also called the Herringbone Braid.

When I was in primary school I always loved the fishtail braid, but my hair was never long enough and my mother didn’t know how to do it. Which meant I never had the joy of having a fishtail braid as a child.

The fishtail braid has moved away from the school ground and onto the red carpet with celebs like Rihanna, Vanessa Hudgens and Fergie rocking the style. From edgy to chic, it is versatile and doesn't need to look childlike.

Best suited for long hair, I can now do the fish tail braid as my hair is now at a decent length to make an okay-ish fishtail. Nothing as lovely as Rihannas or Blake Lively's but  by keeping away from scissors be eventually long enough to make a good one.

The method my aunt taught me was too messy so I gave up half way through my first attempt, but the method in the video below from bebexo on Youtube is easier to do. My first try was a bit messy and as they say practice makes perfect.
